Adopting a Kitten 101

Here at IVC, we’re always receiving kittens that need to be adopted or are asked to help spread the word for kittens that are searching for their furever homes. We love sending each little kitten off to amazing new families, but the most important part of the adoption process is making sure each family knows what to expect and is fully prepared before “gotcha day.”

First things first, kitten proof your home! Just like babies, kittens have a way of getting into things they shouldn’t and turning everyday items into hazards. A few good places to start? Secure electrical cords, chemical cleaning supplies, drawers, and window screens. Also, be sure to leave the toilet seat down as kittens are fascinated with toilet bowls (what could be more fun than that?).

Once your house is kitten-proofed, it’s time to get all of the essential cat parent materials you’ll need to have a happy, healthy kitty!

Here are the major things you’ll need to have in place prior to bringing your kitten home

  • Food & water bowls
  • Litter box
  • Litter box tray liners
  • Litter scoop
  • Kitty litter
  • Cat bed (for when it doesn’t feel like snuggling)
  • Scratching post
  • Collar & ID tag
  • Grooming tools
  • Toys
  • Kitten food
  • Kitten treats
  • Travel crate
  • Flea, tick & worm treatments

So you’ve kitten-proofed your house, purchased all the essentials, and it’s finally time to bring your little furbaby home! Remember, take it slow. Some kittens adjust quickly, some do not. Bring your kitten home to as little noise and stress as possible and avoid inviting guests over for a few days while it adjusts.

If you have other cats, keep them separated until the kitten becomes acclimated to its new environment. Most importantly, give your new furbaby lots of love, lots of cuddles (if it wants them) and lots of play time. Adopting is an exciting time and when you know what to expect and are fully prepared, there are so many happy memories to be made!
