Animals and Acupuncture

Acupuncture, a form of Chinese medicine, is the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to produce a healing response. More commonly thought of as a way to treat human ailments, acupuncture is also used alone or in conjunction with other medicines to treat and heal the pre-existing conditions of animals in the veterinary field.

What conditions could your animal have that would benefit from acupuncture treatment?

Small animals

  • Musculoskeletal problems (arthritis, intervertebral disk disease, traumatic nerve injury)
  • Respiratory problems
  • Skin problems (lick granulomas, allergic dermatitis)
  • Gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea)
  • Selected reproductive problems

Large animals

  • Musculoskeletal problems (sore backs, downer cow syndrome)
  • Neurological problems (facial paralysis)
  • Skin problems (allergic dermatitis)
  • Respiratory problems
  • Gastrointestinal problems (nonsurgical colic)
  • Selected reproductive problems

Acupuncture is a painless process and is one of the safest forms of medical treatment for animals with these conditions. The number of necessary treatments is dependent on the severity of the animal’s current medical condition; some cases may only require one treatment while others may require several.
