CHRISTMAS PUPPYS AND KITTYS – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

“How much is that doggy in the window?” We have all heard this song, or phrase at least once in our lifetime. It’s cute and fluffy and those eyes…you know this puppy is meant for your family. What a great Christmas present, right?

Well, maybe, or maybe not? Each year we have seen an increase in the percentage of puppies and kittens that are abandoned at shelters post-Christmas.

We are all for introducing a new pet to the Family. However, Christmas can be a super stressful time of the year for many. So, after careful consideration of the following, waiting until after the holidays to get that new puppy or kitty may sound like a better idea!

So, before you get all caught up in the cuteness factor, carefully consider the realities of pet ownership. We all know that dogs are amazing companions. However, they require a lot of attention. Especially, during the puppy stages.

On the other hand, cats tend to be more self-sufficient, and not quite as needy. However, cat ownership also comes with a cost.

COST OF PET OWNERSHIP

The following are costs to consider before saying yes to that new puppy or kitty:

  • Cost of adoption, or purchase
  • Food costs (this may increase if your pet has certain allergies, or needs a special diet)
  • Veterinary bills
  • Insurance premiums
  • Grooming
  • Training
  • Boarding
  • Treats and toys
  • Cost of fixing or replacing items

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Ask any fellow dog owner about how their lifestyle or routines have changed since owning a dog. Dogs need to be fed, walked, and exercised. Consider the following:

  • How will this affect your daily routine?
  • This all needs to be down regardless of the weather conditions
  • How will this get done if you work full-time?
  • Can you take your dog to work?
  • Dogs can be messy
  • Puppies and kittens can be destructive

BE PREPARED

Dogs and cats are very important member of our families. Just be prepared for their needs, and yours as a new pet owner.

As an alternative to giving that gift of a pet for Christmas, consider wrapping up a book about dog ownership. This is a great way to get all family members involved in the pet’s care.

If you have children, find a children’s book that can show them how to become responsible pet owners.

After Christmas, as a family, you can all go to that local shelter and give that doggy or kitty their FUREVER home! Happy Holidays from all of us at Independence Veterinary Clinic. We thank you for entrusting your pet’s care with us. We will see you in the New Year!
