Hot Weather Safety Tips for Pets

If you’ve stepped foot outside at all this summer, you’ve realized that it is hot hot hot, and the rising temperatures are no joke. Just like we shouldn’t spend extended amounts of time out in the heat because of the negative effects it can have on our own health, our pets shouldn’t stay outside for long either. How can you keep your pet safe, healthy and cool during the hottest months of the year?

Keep fresh water at the ready

Hydration is key to your pet’s overall good health. Whether you’re hanging out indoors or outdoors, always make sure to have fresh, clean and cool water available. You’ll notice that your pet will likely drink a lot more on very hot and humid days, so it’s important to keep an eye on the water bowl and refill it throughout the day as needed. If you plan on taking your pet with you for a little summertime adventure, remember to bring a portable bowl and container of water with you so that you can take frequent water breaks.

Leave them at home when running errands

Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. Yes, most dogs love to go for rides and we love to take them with us, but if you’re planning on being in and out of your vehicle, leave your dog at home. Not only is leaving a pet unsupervised in a vehicle illegal in several states, it can also quickly lead to fatal heat stroke.

Stick to grass or wooded trails

If you’ve ever stepped barefoot on the pavement during a hot day, you know how badly it burns. We often forget this because we almost always have shoes on to protect our feet, but our pets unfortunately don’t. If you want to take your pet for a walk, it’s best to do so early in the morning or later at night, however even then the pavement can still be very hot from the heat of the day. When walking on hot summer days, it’s best to stick to grass or wooded trails that are shaded and not heated from the sun.

Let your pet swim, but don’t leave it unsupervised

Swimming is a great way to help your pet cool down on hot days, but it also comes with inherent risks. The best way to ensure your pet stays safe while swimming is to never leave it unsupervised. If your pet is new to swimming or a bit uncomfortable, gradually build its confidence in shallow and calm water.
